Local government units (LGUs) in Metro Cebu deployed buses to ferry
passengers even as the transport strike called by the Pagkakaisa ng mga
Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide (PISTON) yesterday failed to
cripple the local transport system here.
Some parts of the cities of Cebu and Mandaue showed a little decline
in the number of public utility jeepneys (PUJ) plying their routes, but
LGU officials said the transport system in general was normal in their
areas.
PISTON-Cebu head Greg Perez earlier said at least 300 members of his group were expected to participate in the rally but only less than 50 people joined the march from Mandaue City to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) 7 building in Cebu City yesterday.
As of 1p.m. yesterday, PISTON has not issued a statement regarding what percentage of the Metro Cebu transport system was affected by the strike.
Perez, however, said what was important was that his group was again able to have another dialogue with LTO officials.
The transport strike was called by the group to express its opposition to the implementation of Joint Administrative Order (JAO) 2014-01 issued by the Department of Transportation and Communications, the LTO and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
The JAO imposes higher penalties for traffic violations. For instance, the fine for driving without a license has been raised from P1,500 to P3,000.
Perez added that PISTON also opposes several Cebu City ordinances imposing higher fees for traffic violations.
The flow of transport in Iloilo was likewise not hampered with transport groups in both Iloilo City and province not joining yesterday the nationwide strike against Joint the Administrative Order (JAO) called for by PISTON.
However, cause-oriented groups led by PISTON-Panay were able to gather some transport groups including drivers and operators in holding a caravan protest from Pavia town to the Western Visayas regional office of Land Transportation (LTO-6) in Iloilo City.
Earlier, the Iloilo City Alliance of Jeepney Operators and Drivers Association (ICAJODA) likewise voiced opposition to what it said were “exuberant” penalty fees imposed by JAO.
