Anti Pork Barrel Movement Turns to Church Goers

The Church People’s Alliance Against the Pork Barrel has turned to Sunday churchgoers to generate more support for its advocacy, after launching signature campaigns outside churches in Metro Manila yesterday.
Church People’s Alliance Against the Pork Barrel’s Nardy Sabino said that outside Quiapo Church yesterday, more than a hundred churchgoers signed a petition seeking the absolute abolition of the pork barrel system within a few hours.
“Actually we are satisfied with the turnout because we see people lining up to sign the petition at the end of every Mass,” said Sabino.
“Some did not sign anymore because they grew impatient with the long lines since we only had three tables for Luzon, the Visayas, and Mindanao,” he added.
Sabino said they expect the number of signatures to increase to thousands if the signatures gathered in other areas are added.
“We have yet to check the turnout in other areas but we expect to gather thousands of signatures today,” he said.
In a statement, Fr. Ben Alforque, convenor of CPAPB, said there is a need to sustain the campaign against the pork barrel to end the cause of corruption in the country.
“Filipinos are sick and tired of pork barrel. What we most need is to create an atmosphere of hope and belief in ourselves, that when we band together as the people, we have unrivaled power and potential to do what is in the best interest of our nation.” He said.
“ In harnessing the power of the people, our nation will surely benefit, but even more, a national budget that actually translates into social and basic service for the poor and majority will be an unprecedented success,” he added.
