With this admission Malacanang yesterday sought public assistance on how to enhance it's disaster response and humanitarian assistance programs in light of the devastating onslaught of Super Typhoon Yolanda in parts of Visayas. On the 100th day since Super Typhoon Yolanda left a trail of death and destruction, PCO Sec. Coloma Jr. admitted that the government's shortcomings in the relief operations despite it's best efforts, asking instead Pilipinos to use the EDSA People Power spirit in extending assistance to the affected families. On Saturday the United Nations said an enormous need for assistance remains unmet 100 days since one of the most powerful typhoons on record devastated Eastern Philippines. Progress has been made in providing relief to survivors but the UN noted that millions still require urgent assistance for housing and livelihoods destroyed by Super Typhoon Yolanda. Luiza Carvalho, UN resident and humanitarian coordinator for the Philippines called for more donations to help the survivors, noting that only 45% of the UN's aid appeal for $788 Million has been received. More than 6,200 people were killed and nearly 1,800 are still missing after the storm triggered tidal surges up to 5 meters high. More than 4 million people were displaced and more than 1 million homes damaged or destroyed the government said. The government estimated reconstruction of the devastated communities would cost Php 361Billion.
