Following a meeting on Thursday afternoon that included Greek government and SYRIZA party members, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is expected to call for snap elections in September.
Tsipras is anticipated to make a proclamation on the snap elections around 8 p.m. Greek time on Thursday. Reuters reports that after Thursday’s meeting, a senior official of the Greek government said the goal is to hold the elections on September 20.
Should the prime minister go ahead with this decision he will have to resign in order to participate in the next elections and Greece’s Supreme Court President Vassiliki Thanou- Christophilou will take over the country’s reigns until the elections.
Intense snap election speculation has mounted after a very public rift within his SYRIZA party, with a number of his MPs openly disagreeing and criticizing his adoption of a third Greek bailout.
