Greece Lifts Some Online Transaction Restrictions, cardholders will now be able to use debit and credit cards for internet transactions with companies not based in Greece

After a month of capital controls in Greece, the country’s Finance Ministry has lifted some transaction restrictions. Among the most significant ones is the reinstatement of online transactions with foreign companies.
Greek cardholders will now be able to use debit and credit cards for internet transactions with companies not based in Greece. However, some limitations on these transactions will still apply.
The permitted transactions include airline tickets, hotel reservations, software applications, car rentals and insurance payments, among others.
Transactions will also have a daily upper limit that varies depending on each bank. The four major Greek banks, Alpha Bank, National Bank of Greece (NBG), Eurobank and Piraeus Bank have a 300,000 euro daily cap. Attica Bank will allow up to 90,000 euros of such transactions per day.
The Restrictions on transfers abroad and other capital controls remain in place because the Greek  banks’ financial health remains critical. Transfers of money to other countries are allowed only with permission from the Greek central bank and the Finance Ministry who examine requests on a case-by-case basis
