The Philippines will sit for the first time as a member of the Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Initiative (NPDI) when foreign ministers of the 12 member countries meet here Saturday Apr. 12, 2014 for a ministerial meeting to step up global efforts towards no introduction, no production of nuclear weapons. The Philippines along with Nigeria joined the NPDI in September last year affirming the country's commitment in promoting Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament. The other member countries aside from Japan and Australia are Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Canada, Mexico, Chile, Turkey and UAE. Admitting earlier that progress on nuclear disarmament is insufficient and the proliferation of nuclear weapons is becoming more serious, Japan the only country to have suffered the devastation caused by an Atomic Bomb is drawing the world's attention to the damage caused by the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in holding the ministerial meeting here to spread awareness of the lasting effects of radiation 69 years after the attack and show the catastrophic humanitarian consequences.
