Michael Christian Martinez of the Philippines competes during the figure skating men's free skating program at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics, Feb. 14, 2014. He finishes at 19th Place in the medal round at the Winter Olympics in Sochi Friday night. The 17 yr. old garnered a total score of 184.25 after it was combined with his previous score of 64.81 in the men's short program Thursday where he also finished at 19th Place. Martinez was hoping to bring home an Olympic medal, but a slip and the obvious disadvantage in training compared to the other contenders dimmed that hope, but not his resolve to make it the best performance of his life. In the end he fought magnificently and still performed impressively. Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu took the gold medal with a score of 280.09. Silver medal went to Patrick Chan of Canada with a score of 275.62 followed by Dennis Ten of Kazakhstan with 255.10 for bronze medal. Martinez earned the support of fans from here and abroad who saw enormous potential to the figure skating newcomer from a tropical country.
