The though Mayor of Davao City Rodrigo Duterte is shrugging off calls for him to run as President in 2016, saying he is not qualified for higher public office. Suggestions for him to run as the Chief Executive of the land became ripe early this week when Duterte appeared before the Senate committee hearing on rice smuggling and issued another one of his in your face threats, this time directed to alleged big time rice smuggler Davidson Bangayan a.k.a David Tan. While the commission of Human Rights and the Malacanang Palace frowned at Duterte's daring remarks, they earned the macho mayor from the South brownie points from the public who were glad to hear him declare that he would be willing to go to jail for the love of country. Social media which was on fire the moment Duterte's word against criminals were posted have people rallying Duterte to run in in the 2016 presidential elections. They believe Duterte could be the less talk more action kind of an official who could make the country better. But no amount of prodding and promises of votes could make the mayor aspire for the presidency, an idea he had repeatedly dismissed in the past. Duterte said he's been aware of the constant prodding of people online for him to run but also insisted that the presidency doesn't appeal to him at all so he won't. Duterte said if he would become a president he himself would declare a revolution and rebel against his own government and close down everything. Duterte has a Bachelor of Arts from the Lyceum of the Philippines University in 1968. He took up law in San Beda College in 1972 and in the same year he passed the bar exam. Duterte was appointed as the officer in charge Vice Mayor after the 1986 People Power Revolution. He became mayor 2 years later and served for the next 10 years. As mayor he designated deputy mayors representing the Lumad and Moro people in the city government, a move that was later copied in the other parts of the country. In 1998 Duterte ran for the House of Representatives and won as Congressman for the 1st District of Davao City. In 2011 he ran again for mayor in Davao and won for his 4th term. He was re elected in 2004 and in 2007. In 2010 he was elected Vice Mayor succeeding his daughter Sara Duterte-Carpio who was elected as mayor.
