Workers install concrete barriers along the Osmena Highway on Feb. 17, 2014 closing off 2 inner southbound lanes of the highway from the corner of Zobel Roxas Ave. to San Andres st. as construction of the 14.8 Km Skyway 3 project linking North and South Luzon Expressway begins. Malacanang Palace urged yesterday Local Government Units (LGUs) to help ease traffic in Metro Manila by ensuring that alternate routes are completely utilized while the Skyway Stage 3 project is ongoing. PCOO Sec. Coloma Jr. said the LGUs should do their part in clearing some alternate routes at they can't be fully utilized because it's being used as parking space by the residents. We really need the participation of the LGUs. They should appeal to their residents and barangay officials to keep away parked cars on the road so it can be used as alternate routes. He also said the roads shouldn't be used as basketball courts nothing that this is the time when Pilipinos should show the bayanihan spirit. He also urged the public for voluntary remedial measures while construction of the Skyway Stage 3 is ongoing and is scheduled to be completed before the Pres. Aquino's term ends in 2016. Coloma also said that the 4 day school week to ease traffic congestion is a suggestion and would need consultation with various stakeholders. Some of those in the education sector are cold to the idea of the 4 day school week saying that it isn't a long term solution to traffic within metropolis.
