Work to extend Line 3 of the Athens metro from Aegaleo in eastern Athens to the port of Piraeus began on Wednesday.
The boring machine, nicknamed Ippodamos, will take 2.5 years to tunnel the 6.5 kilometers needed for the extension to be built.
This will lead to the creation of six new stations: Aghia Varvara, Korydallos, Nikaia, Maniatika, Piraeus and Dimotiko Theatro.
The project is due to be completed by 2017.
