Angola stayed unbeaten through the 2013 FIBA Africa Championship, to book a ticket to the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain, along with runner-up Egypt and third-placers Senegal, Saturday (Sunday, PHL time) in Abidjian, Ivory Coast.
The second-placers in the 2011 tourney, Angola had topped Group C with a 3-0 card, before stomping through the rest of the competition, besting Mali in the round of 16, 82-36, Morocco in the quarterfinals, 95-73, and the hosts Ivory Coast in the semis, 66-59, en route to the Finals.
Egypt on the other hand bucked a 0-3 card in the group stage to stun the 2011 tournament champions Tunisia in the Sweet 16, 77-67. They then scraped by Cape Verde 74-73, and dispatched Senegal 70-63, setting up their championship match with Angola.
In the finals, Egypt took a slight 13-12 lead after the first quarter, but Angola flexed their defensive muscle, holding their foes to just 15 points in the middle two periods, while they scored a combined 34 markers. The fourth quarter then was more of a formality, as the eventual winners kept Egypt at arm's length the rest of the way, until the final buzzer sounded with the score at 57-40.
Angola's Carlos Morais was named tournament MVP with averages of 15.9 points (41.76 FG%, 35.29 3P%), 4.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists.
The battle for third-place saw Senegal squeak past the Ivory Coast, 57-56.
Angola, Egypt and Senegal join hosts Spain, Olympic gold medalists USA, the three FIBA Asia representatives Iran, Philippines and Korea, and the two Oceania reps Australia and New Zealand. Currently on-going is the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship, which will see four teams become part of the field
